Ten Fighting Chance Tips for Coping With Cancer

  • Always ask LOTS of questions! Ask questions of yourself, of your family, of your doctor!
  • Identify your emotional, physical and spiritual priorities.
  • Create a community of friends, family and caregivers to help you meet those priorities.
  • Identify what it would mean for you to feel more empowered.
  • Find a medical team you feel good about.
  • When selecting doctors, find out how much experience he/she has with your particular diagnosis and treatment.
  • How comfortable is the doctor with patients obtaining second opinions?
  • How well does the doctor answer your questions?
  • How willing is the doctor to work as a team with other doctors who are treating you?
  • Is the doctor’s approach and philosophy consistent with your values?
  • Most importantly: trust your intuition. Do you feel comfortable, and at ease?
  • Do you feel that the doctor is competent, knowledgeable and caring?
