Community Support Organizations
Sometimes it will be hard to predict where your journey with cancer will take you and what you will need along the way. Knowing your community resources and the wide range of options available to you may provide you with a sense of empowerment and control.
Challenge: How can I find the organizations on the East End that will address my various needs as I cope with cancer?
Solution: There are a number of community organizations that can provide support for your changing needs. As you face your own unique challenges dealing with cancer, tapping into the network of services that exist on the East End may strengthen your life preserver and connect you with others who face similar challenges.
Community Advocacy
Knowing your rights as a cancer patient and accessing services can be complicated. There are organizations on the East End that focus on empowering, educating and supporting people as they face the challenges of coping with cancer:

Cancer Survivors Network, online community (Eng.& Span.) to find hope and inspiration. Provides recources in the local community by maintaining a comprehensive list of organizations that cancer patients and their families can benefit from.

South Fork Breast Health Coalition
Grassroots organization that aims to educate women about the importance of MONTHLY self breast exams, ANNUAL CLINICAL BREAST EXAMS and annual mammograms as preventive measures. Through various support programs the Coalition is also dedicated to helping relieve the day-to-day pressures for breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy by helping them to manage family and home commitments during this stressful period.

Cancer Support Groups
Another way you may find extra support is by joining a support group. This is a place where people who have similar experiences can come together to express thoughts, feelings, concerns as well as receive helpful information. The shared experience can be a powerful source of hope and strength. Groups may be facilitated by a professional or patient volunteers. Many support groups are now available on-line via the Internet. CancerCare
Provides counseling by professional oncology social workers to all those affected by cancer. Financial assistance and educational programs are offered as well. Group counseling is also available in person, over the phone, and online to individuals. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – Long Island Patient Services
The Long Island Chapter works with patients in Nassau and Suffolk counties offering family support, caregiver support and parents of children with cancer telephone support groups. The peer counseling program, First Connection, connects a newly diagnosed patient with a trained volunteer who has experienced a similar situation. Trained volunteer survivors offer support and information to individuals or patients’ family members who are learning to cope with Leukemia, Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Myeloma. Presents educational programs on blood cancers as well as survivorship issues.Programs open to patients, families and health care professionals.The Society also offers limited financial aid for patients diagnosed with a blood cancer.

Tip #14 Community Resources for Breast Cancer
Southampton is home base for an extraordinary non-profit organization called the “South Fork Breast Health Coalition.” It is a gold mine of useful information for women diagnosed with (or concerned about) breast cancer. The coalition also provides lymphedema massage, help with some transportation, and support groups.
The coalition is run by Susie Roden who can be reached at 631-726-8606. She works closely with the Breast Health Center at Southampton Hospital.
